Support: Doctoral Projects

The doctoral programmes are located within the research fields of the University of Applied Arts Vienna (see list of institutes and detailed organisational diagram) and are supported by Support for Art and Research. The following doctoral programmes are being offered:

  • Doctoral Programme in Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.)
  • Doctoral Programme in Philosophy (Dr. phil.)
  • Doctoral Programme in Technical Sciences (Dr. techn.)
  • Doctoral Programme Artistic Research (PhD in Art)
  • Transformation Studies. Art x Science (PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies)

Workplaces

Within the available resources, Support Art and Research administrates and provides temporary work- and research spaces for project employees and doctoral students.

Workshops and library

The University of Applied Arts offers multiple workshops. More information including contact information can be found here. Furthermore, the library of the university can be used.

Audio-visual research instruments (ÆSR Lab)

ÆSR Lab provides high-quality audio-visual equipment for artistic and scientific research. The equipment can be borrowed by scientists, artists, students, and the interested public. The infrastructure is made available exclusively for research purposes, but not for events, exhibitions, or the like. All information about the conditions and process of lending can be found here.

Funding

Candidates are expected to arrange their own funding. More information about scholarships and funding at the Angewandte can be found here: Financial Issues > Scholarships, grants. Other helpful websites might be dasfundus, newsbase, and grants.

Exchange programme for incoming students

Students from other universities are welcome to apply for an exchange at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Information can be found in the info sheet and on the website of the university.

Project proposals

The ZFF readily advises doctoral candidates on applying for third-party funding of projects, specifically regarding content, administration, financial and conceptual considerations, and the provision of specialist feedback. Please send your project ideas directly to Alexander Damianisch, preferably with three possible meeting dates for one-on-one feedback.

Career advancement and continuing education

Doctoral students can participate in career development measures and the latest continuing education programme of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The condition is a current employment at the University.

Publication funding / ARTist

ARTist supports publications with a maximum amount of EUR 1,500. 

To apply for publication funding, submit these documents by email to artist@uni-ak.ac.at: Concept for the publication, budget including cost estimates, curriculum vitae of the applicant, and letter of recommendation from a professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. 

Following evaluation, you will receive a written approval or rejection. In case of approval, a freelance contract will be issued, and payment will be made upon submission of 5 copies of the publication. The funding agreement requires adding the logo of the Angewandte and ARTist to the publication. Further information can be found here.

Short presentation of the research project within the scientific doctoral programmes

General Information

Within the scientific doctoral programmes, the dissertation project has to be presented in a short presentation within the first two semesters with an exposé and in front of a scientific advisory board. More information can be found in the curriculum and the guidelines for the scientific doctoral programmes.

Every year, three dates are offered (see dates and deadlines). Students have 15 minutes to present their projects, followed by 10 minutes of discussion.

The short presentations are open to the public. To register and get the detailed programme, please contact sdkf@uni-ak.ac.at.

Registration, dates, and deadlines

The preliminary first supervisor has to be present at the short presentation, thus, please register in agreement with them. If applicable, this is also effective for the second supervisor. For the short presentations, students have to be admitted to the doctoral programme.

The registration has to take place before the respective deadline via e-mail to sdkf@uni-ak.ac.at. Please include the following (preliminary) information in your registration:

  • which doctoral programme you are enrolled in (Philosophy/Technical Sciences/Natural Sciences)
  • topic/working title of your dissertation
  • possible supervisor/s
  • language of your dissertation
  • if a single-disciplinary or interdisciplinary dissertation is planned and which disciplinary it belongs to (if it is interdisciplinary, two supervisors are mandatory)
  • if a monography or cumulative dissertation is planned (for more information on cumulative dissertations, please see the curriculum)

The next dates and deadlines for the short presentations are as follows:

  • 06.12.2024 (registration deadline: 25.10.2024, proposal deadline: 21.11.2024)
  • 07.03.2025 (registration deadline: 24.01.2025, proposal deadline: 20.02.2025)
  • 02.05.2025 (registration deadline: 21.03.2025, proposal deadline: 17.04.2025)

Research proposal (exposé)

The research proposal is a written description of the envisioned doctoral project and should present the research interests as well as the specific research question.

Recommended length: 2,500 words (excl. sources), total approx. 10 pages, recommended structure:

  • Title of the thesis, name of the doctoral candidate and name of the supervisor.
  • Description of the doctoral project
  • Clearly formulated research question
  • Presentation of methodology
  • References
  • Timetable and work schedule
  • Short curriculum vitae
